What do you know about your staff?

I once had a staff member who applied for leave so that he could lead a group of international botanists on a study trip in the Karoo. At the time, I didn’t know he could tell the difference between a vygie and a fig tree. Or that he was on first name terms with my cousin, a well know cultivator of exotic succulents.

Niche marketing – Part 1 – Getting ready

“I want it all, I want it all, I want it all, and I want it now.” These are the lyrics from a well-known song by Queen and not the demanding whine of your teenager. Come to think of it, you may have heard the phrase around the office.

Point is, as you keep telling your children, you cannot have it all – no matter who you are. But you can have a large chunk of it.

Have you made the right choice?

Is your new employee the right person for the job? And what are your options if he/she isn’t? The jury is out on some of the more stringent aspects of labour legislation, especially around hiring and firing staff. However, using a probation period to assess the employee’s performance, ability and suitability for the job prior to a permanent appointment does provide a measure of leeway for the employer.
